HARROGATE DISTRICT STRATEGIC HOUSING AND ECONOMIC LAND AVAILABLITY ASSESSMENT As you have previously commented on, or requested to be informed of, information relating to the Harrogate District Local Plan I am writing to make you aware that the Strategic Housing and Employment Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA) is now available to view on the council’s at http://consult.harrogate.gov.uk/portal/pp/so/shelaa/shelaa The SHELAA is a technical document that provides information about sites, submitted to the council for consideration as part of the Local Plan, which may have some potential for housing or employment at some stage in the future. It includes maps of settlements where land has been suggested, and provides some brief information about the sites e.g. the proposed use for the site. The SHELAA is important as it helps to inform the preparation of the new Local Plan but it is not a planning decision making document and it does not determine if a site should be allocated for development or whether planning permission would be granted for development: the allocation of sites for future housing or economic development will be identified through the emerging Harrogate District Local Plan or Neighbourhood Plans. However, it does make realistic assumptions about the availability, suitability and deliverability of land to meet the identified housing and employment need over the plan period. At this stage the SHELAA is being published for information only; please do not send any comments at this time; you will be able to comment on this document later in the year. We had hoped to consult on the SHELAA this summer, however, as this would mean consulting over the school holiday period we have now decided to hold the consultation alongside the Draft Local Plan to allow as many people as possible to comment. If you require any further information then please email planningpolicy@harrogate.gov.uk. Alternatively ring 01423 500600 and ask to speak to the Planning Policy team.
